Automatic Safeties

Why do European shotguns have automatic safeties? I can see it on a field gun but not a target gun. Are they concerned with one of us shooing our selfs? I have guns with no safeties (except the one between my ears) and that was just fine for centuries. It is just one more thing to think about on the line.
